Reading

This was, once again, a slow reading week. I finished The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. I listened to the audiobook, though this book has illustrations, so it might be better in print. It’s a children’s book about a robot that wakes up on an island and learns to talk to the animals. At first suspicious, the animals eventually come to rely on the robot, and he becomes a part of their ecosystem.
This was a wonderfully charming book. It made me smile a lot, laugh a few times, and feel sympathy for the plight of the animals and the robot. It’s a short listen too, at only four hours. A great way to spend an afternoon.

I’m still reading The Will of the Many, though I have only about 100 pages left. I should have it done in the next couple of days. This is shaping up to be my favorite book of the year so far.

I started Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes on audio. This is a classic scifi novel about a mentally handicapped man, Charlie, who undergoes a surgery to make him smarter. Charlie is the narrator of the tale as well. The story is told through progress reports he has to write as a condition of undergoing this procedure. The first few entries are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, but those become fewer and fewer as the story progresses.
I know I’m going to like this book, as I read an abridged version way back in middle school and it stuck with me. If you pick this one up, be prepared to read about a lot of bullying and abuse.
Writing
I had a couple of productive writing days followed by some duds. Eid ul-Fitr was this past Monday, so no writing was done then. Also, I didn’t do any writing yesterday morning. Sometimes you just have one of those mornings and nothing productive gets done. It’s best to let those days go and move forward.
